Polyamory, The Next Sexual Revolution?

Opinion By Ed Hubbard

Polyamory is the newest buzz in sexual identity and relationships. It is sweeping the country by storm in a time when Gays and Hetero communities seek to limit relationships to a monogamous coupling called “marriage”. For some, one lover is not enough, and some groups find committed sexuality to be the answer to a strong and healthy libido. For those who see committed relationships beyond the monogamous couple, they are becoming part of the emerging Polyamory community.

What is Polyamory? It is the relationship of committed individuals of groups of three or more. Group marriages and other similar couplings fall under this category. This is not swinging. Polyamory is about being involved with a tight circle of individuals with no one person having a sexual relationship outside that group commitment. Jealousy and ownership is less likely, and polyamorists” even have a word for the opposite feeling they experience, called “compersion”. Compersion is the feeling of joy and happiness for your partners expressing love with one another. Such a feeling is rare and unique to the Polyamory community… so far at least.

The world of Polyamory is an expression from ancient times when men and women shared love partners for various reasons. Polygamy (having more than one wife) is the most common form of polyamory in history, practiced by Christians, Moslems, Hindus, and nearly every culture on earth. Today, with recognition of the equality of sexes, with acceptance of Hetero & Homosexual lifestyles, with a growing Bisexual community, and a fear of diseases like AIDS and Hepatitis, Polyamory makes a lot of sense for those who desire a sexually open and diverse sex life. No wonder it is becoming a lifestyle that is finding more and more advocates and practitioners. In the 21st century, Polyamory may be the next great sexual revolution.
