1. With public perception of our government and Congress waning, what would you do to restore the confidence of the people that their officials truly are working for the best interests of their constituents, not for the interests of Party or big business? Enact the "Clean Money, Clean Elections" campaign reform bill, of which I am a co-sponsor.

2. Rising costs for education, health insurance, and fuel are straining the ability of middle class families to make ends meet, even if both spouses work. As Congressman what, if anything, would you do to help working families that are struggling to get by?

  • Raise the minimum wage.
  • Repeal Bush tax cuts for millionaires and replace with tax deductibility for college tuition and other assistance to help working families.
  • Enact Universal Health Care coverage for all Americans.
  • Protect Social Security and oppose Bush privatization plan.
  • Repeal the huge tax cut for oil companies and develop clean, alternative sources of energy.
  • Enact H.R. 1589, the Family and Workplace Balancing Act of 2005. Provides assistance for working families through: (1) family and medical care leave; (2) expanded child care for young children and incentives for child care providers; (3) preschool, in-school, and afterschool nutrition and education; (4) temporary and part-time workers pension and health plan benefits; and (5) encouragement of business use of employee telecommuting.

3. What is your position regarding the balance of power between Federal law and State’s rights? For example, when the Federal government trumps State laws legalizing medical marijuana, gay marriage, or euthanasia? The Federal Government should not overrule more progressive State laws, but should have the right to expand civil rights for all.

4. In combating the war on terror, do you believe the United States is currently following the best course of action at home and abroad? What, if anything, should the U.S. be doing differently? The Bush policies have been an abject failure. We should chart a new direction and: Set a timetable, and immediately begin a troop withdrawal from Iraq. Immediately implement the recommendations of the 9/11 Commission. Screen 100% of containers entering our ports--not the 5% we're checking now. Honor our commitment to Veterans. The Bush proposal to cut veterans' health care benefits is outrageous. Focus on the REAL threats: Osama bin Laden and terrorist networks like al-Qaeda.

5. In the name of National Security, is it reasonable for Americans to expect some of their civil liberties and Constitutional protections to be curtailed during this war? I believe that as we continue to deal with the new reality of terrorist threats, we must also be careful not to go too far and risk eroding the civil liberties which mean so much to all of us. When the House considered the USA PATRIOT and Terrorism Prevention Reauthorization Act of 2005 I voted NO. I could not support this bill because it made permanent a number of provisions that have little to do with combating terrorism, but which do curtail the civil rights of average Americans and intrude on our privacy.

6. What do you see as the greatest challenge facing America, and what would you do about it? Restoring our international reputation. The biggest step we can take in that direction is to elect a Democratic Congress this Fall. We must reverse the failed Bush policies and Change Direction -- at home and abroad. I am committed to that effort.

7. Why should the people of the 21st district choose you over all others? I have been an aggressive advocate for working families throughout my career. I have also been effective in representing my constituents. In the last national survey by the Associated Press, my district ranked 45th highest out of all 435 congressional districts in the receipt of federal funding. My progressive voting record has earned me the endorsements of numerous labor organizations, the Sierra Club, and Citizen Action.
